HISTORY OF POSAT

POSAT was the brainchild of Dr. Chhabria. He always wished to keep our rehabilitation professionals at par with their western counterparts and that too in an era where internet and google were unheard of . With this vision , POSAT was founded in 1978 to offer a common platform for rehabilitation professionals to share their knowledge and complement each other in the treatment of the patients. POSAT organized courses, seminars, workshops and lectures by eminent national and international speakers to disseminate knowledge of scientific research in the field of rehabilitation medicine.

A few years later POSATians felt the need to have their own rehabilitation center so as to apply this theoretical knowledge into practice through specific therapeutic intervention for the management of their patients. This led to the start of a rehabilitation center in Borivali in 1993 in a small 300 sq. ft room.The therapy sessions were provided for a nominal fee of Rs 30/- and committed therapists worked here seven days a week without any financial expectations.

Since it was the only center in the suburbs providing all required therapies under one roof, it soon became popular for pediatric as well adult patients with neurological impairment. A larger space was the need of the hour and by the year 2000 POSAT was providing its services from a 1400 sq. ft center. Presently counselling sessions , somatosensory and craniosacral therapy sessions are also provided apart from therapeutic intervention and remediation. The center has succeeded in expanding in Borivali just like a banyan tree . It has no other branches yet.

Soon the need arose for Special Education as the number of dyslexics and children with learning disabilities from normal schools had started rising. Hence a remedial educator was appointed . However there were a few kids who could not cope in academics in spite of remedial therapy. So a special class with 6 children was started in 1995 at the Railway Welfare Center, Borivali . Unfortunately we had to vacate the place after a year and a half due to project feasibility issues. The class was shifted to Varsha Nanavati’s house for 2 years. She truly obliged the organization by continuing the special class till the number of children went up to 22.

We had a breakthrough in 1998 when Mary Immaculate Girls High School allotted a class for us and there was no looking back. Today POSAT runs two shifts in two classrooms allotted free of charge by Rustomjee International School, Dahisar . Another class which was being run in Balbharti school , Kandivali has been recently shifted to S.V.P. School in Kandivali .

At present 120 children are enrolled in these special classes receiving all facilities that a normal school would provide. We , the trustees , therapists, teachers , the children and their parents are very grateful to the management of all four schools for supporting our activities.
